Sheaths , Double Layers and Dust Levitation

چکیده
This paper contains an overview of certain sheath phenomena, namely the criterion for sheath formation, some examples of double layers and a description of some recent experiments on the suspension ofdust particles in a sheath. A detailed review is not attempted and results obtained at Oxford are used to illustrate the last two topics.

Simulations of the photoelectron sheath and dust levitation on the lunar surface
[1] The lunar surface represents a complex plasma environment due to the presence of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the incoming solar wind flux and charged, levitated micron‐ and sub‐micron sized dust particles. Photoemission due to solar UV radiation dominates the charging environment, creating a photoelectron sheath above the lunar surface. To further investigate the dusty plasma environm...
متن کاملSheaths with Dust Particles in the Oblique Magnetic Field
It is simulated the non-linear one-dimensional sheaths with dust particles of the given size, density and profile in an oblique magnetic field, using the modified PIC method with self-consistent dust particle charge. The Coulomb scattering and the collection of electrons and ions by dust particles are simulated by the Monte-Carlo method with 3D velocity distribution functions for electrons and ...
متن کاملExperimental levitation of dust grains in a plasma sheath
[1] Dust grains have been observed to levitate above the surface of the Moon and as spokes in Saturn’s rings. In order to gain a better understanding of these observations, we have performed levitation experiments on dust grains in a low-density plasma. Plasma sheath potential profiles, measured by an emissive probe, are used to determine the spatial dependence of the electric force on a grain ...
متن کاملDust grain charging and levitation in a weakly collisional sheath
An experiment is described in which monodisperse dust grains are levitated within a dc sheath above a conducting plate in argon plasma. For plate bias voltages that are not too negative ~>210 electron temperatures!, the observed dust levitation heights are near to values calculated from a model combining equations for the sheath with those for grain charging. When the plate is more negatively b...
متن کاملDust transport in photoelectron layers and the formation of dust ponds on Eros
We investigate the electrostatic transport of charged dust in the photoelectron layer over the dayside surface of an asteroid. Micronsized dust particles may be levitated above the surface in the photoelectron layer. Horizontal transport within the layer can then lead to net deposition of dust into shadowed regions where the electric field due to the photoelectron layer disappears. We apply a 2...
